As part of their topic on old toys, KS1 visited Amersham Museum to look at old toys to see what materials they were made of and to compare them with modern toys. They took part in a workshop and made a cup and ball, a peg doll and a zoetrope.
On Takeover Day, KS1 became curators of Amersham Museum. They showed their parents around the museum, pointing out all the work on display completed during their recent old toys topic.
After learning about the ancient Egyptian ritual of mummification. LKS2 used first aid bandages to wrap a mummy (a person in their group!). At the end of the activity, they compared the craftsmanship of each of the groups and their mummification skills.
LKS2 had a great time at the British Museum looking at Egyptian artefacts as part of their topic on Ancient Egypt. They found out about the Rosetta Stone, mummification, gods and goddesses and the Egyptian afterlife.
As a fab finisher to their Egyptian topic, LKS2 took part in an Egyptian Day. The children dressed up in Egyptian costumes and designed and made Egyptian jewellery as part of their Design Technology project.
UKS2 found out what life would have been like in Amersham during WW2. They tried on gas marks, learnt about rationing and how children their age were evacuated to places like Amersham.
Year 1/2 learnt about living in Victorian and Tudor houses.. They visited Amersham Old Town and found out about the history of some of the local buildings, including the museum which is Tudor. The children handled objects that were used everyday in the old houses and guessed what they might be used for.
Year 5/6 discovered that Anglo-Saxon houses were rectangular huts made of wood with roofs thatched with straw. The children designed and made their own Anglo Saxon houses using this knowledge. They also created their own Anglo - Saxon coins and jewellery.
After learning about everyday life in Greece, the children in Year 5/6 dressed up in the role of an ancient Greek citizen. They learnt some Greek Zorba dancing and created group plays based on the 12 labours of Hercules.
In September 2023, the school celebrated its 150th anniversary. On this day, children dressed as Victorians and paraded to the church as children would have done 150 years ago. The church service described how life had changed at St Marys in the last 150 years. The children wrote letters for the time capsule and each class chose two items to put into the time capsule to be opened by future pupils. Each family in the school, received an anniversary book full of pictures and writing detailing the history of the school.
KS2 enjoyed learning about life in the time of the Vikings. They dressed up as Vikings for the day and took part in some exciting workshops. They created Viking shields, examined Viking shields and even had a visit from a ‘real Viking!”
The children in Year 3 /4 were very excited when they took part in a Roman day Workshop. They enjoyed dressing up as Romans and finding out about what their life would have been like if they were a Roman soldier. They handled shields, helmets and spears that a Roman soldier would have used. Some children were dressed up as a Roman soldier to see what it would feel like to wear the uniform. During one of the workshops, “Boudicca” described to the children what her life was like.
