The development of mathematics is fostered carefully from an early age. The importance of understanding the basic concepts involved in this area of the curriculum through practical or ‘concrete’ experiences is emphasised. The practical and the abstract are seen as being interdependent at every stage. Knowledge of key mathematics concepts is developed in small, carefully sequenced steps which focus on building conceptual understanding alongside developing fluency in arithmetic. We embed the core skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, realising the importance and application of number in an everyday real life context, and promote the importance of learning the multiplication tables and their related division facts through fun, effective, relevant lessons, celebrating individual achievements along the way. In lessons, children explore mathematical concepts through a variety of representations and problems. They have opportunities to work both collaboratively and independently and are encouraged to think clearly and logically. Developing mathematical language, reasoning and skills in applying mathematics are all set in the context of the other areas of mathematics. Enthusiasm for mathematics is fostered through the use of Active Maths and problem solving lessons whereby children are able to apply the learning in varied challenging situations. As with English, St Mary’s continues to follow the National Curriculum for teaching mathematics. Children in Years 1 to 6 have a daily lesson lasting 60 minutes. A nominated member of the teaching staff acts as the School’s Mathematics Leader, responsible for overseeing implementation of the subject throughout the School.
