History

At St Mary’s, we endeavour to teach History and historical enquiry within a broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils leave the school with a secure understanding of chronology; both in British and World History. Through the study of historical evidence and through exploring their local area, pupils will develop a deep understanding of the rich history of their locality. Lessons are linked to a range of engaging topics, giving pupils the opportunity to investigate the past in exciting and purposeful ways. Children learn to ask and answer questions, using a wide range of sources to build on prior knowledge as they progress through the school. The curriculum focuses on comparing and contrasting past and present ways of life, asking and answering questions about historical events, and using historical vocabulary. They are encouraged not only to study the past but also to form their own interpretations, supporting their ideas with evidence and developing the ability to communicate historically in a clear and meaningful way.
