Geography

"The study of Geography is about more than just memorising places on a map, it’s about understanding the complexity of our world.”

(Barrack Obama)

Our Geography curriculum at St Mary’s aims to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, igniting their passion for this subject. We provide a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum, whilst ensuring the progressive development of geographical concepts, knowledge and skills. Pupils at St Mary’s have opportunities to understand that the physical and human dimensions of the environment are interrelated, influencing changes in our environment. Our teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. We aim to develop geographical skills through enjoyable, purposeful and active learning opportunities such as a variety of fieldwork; using maps; enjoying full use of our on-site orienteering facilities and interpreting sources of information. Children’s enthusiasm for geographical learning is enhanced by the many enrichment opportunities we provide. Alongside the children having opportunities to experience field and residential trips, we have forged strong links with our local museum and Wild Amersham, taking full advantage of our school meadow and on-site environmental area.
